At Demetree Global, we take pride in providing students with real world experience through our internship program. Recently, we sat down with Jonathan Chou, one of our real estate interns who we are excited to have on our team, to ask about his experience and any key takeaways he has gathered during his time with us.
Here’s what Jonathan had to say:
1. How did you find out about your internship?
As a sophomore, I received a Facebook notification in the UCF Real Estate group regarding a potential internship opportunity with Demetree Global’s asset management team. I reached out to the HR team and learned a lot about Demetree Global and their investment strategies. After a few rounds of interviews and a particularly in-depth case study that tested my technical and analytical skills, I received an offer and graciously accepted!
2. What do you think set you apart from other candidates and led to you getting the position over other candidates?
I am not the best nor the smartest, and I will never claim to be. However, my number one fear in life is letting anyone down, which drives me to produce the best work I possibly can. Prior to joining Demetree Global, I had completed two internships at well-respected firms and was often the first one in the office and last one to leave. I think what ultimately set me apart from other candidates was my ability to convey to the hiring manager my work ethic and desire to learn.
3. What do you enjoy most from the experience?
I really enjoyed being given “real” work that contributes to the company rather than the “grunt” work you see all the interns doing in movies. The culture at Demetree Global is vibrant and innovative, and it quite honestly feels like working with a second family.
4. What were the key takeaways for you?
Always double and triple check your numbers. There is a big difference between a 10% IRR and a 100% IRR.
5. Can you give any advice to future Demetree Global interns?
Whether you’re working in the marketing, accounting or asset management departments, you should be ready to hit the ground running. While asking questions is absolutely encouraged, you won’t have your hand held during all of your work. The company moves fast and needs people who can keep up, and your contributions will not go unnoticed.
6. What are you future plans?
I’ve always seen myself as a managing director for a regional team in a location of my choosing. As far as which area of commercial real estate I will work in, I think I’ll continue to watch where the market is heading and position myself in a successful area.
